Tips for Wearing Blue and Lavender Eye Makeup

Ever since the fashion mishaps of the 1980s, blue eye makeup hues have been sworn off by beauty experts and industry insiders alike. Although we’ve all been conditioned to believe that blue eye makeup is an absolute no-no, a bluish tinge to the eyelids can result in a beautiful accent when done right. The good news is that blue eye makeup hues are making a comeback. They are becoming the trendiest shades to wear because they look gorgeous with all eye colors and all skin types. Follow these tips for wearing blue and lavender eye makeup to make youreyes glamorous.

Blue colored hues look best on women with fair skin and platinum or black colored hair and brown or gray eyes, or on women with very dark skin. For example, a few brushes of blue focuses your attention on Eve's eyes (see left).

Is it OK to wear blue eye makeup if I have blue eyes?
If you have blue eyes, navy compliments you best. You want to refrain from matching the eye makeup to your eye color. Otherwise, your eye makeup will be competing with your eye color and your eyes will end up being washed out. All anyone will notice is the eye makeup. Remember, you want your eyes to be on display not your makeup (see Taylor Swift's blue eyes below).

Should my eye makeup match my clothes?
As a general rule you should avoid matching your eyeshadow to your clothing. However, eyeliner and mascara are fine to match.

Which color of eyeshadow will look best on me?
Cool colors like deep purples and lilacs make green eyes look gorgeous, while navy or indigo can make blue eyes pop. Lilac and purples look best on brown eyes and bronze-skinned, olive-skinned and black-skinned women. Avoid pinky-purples if you have pink skin (as opposed to a yellow base). Pale purples simply look good on everyone: blondes, redheads, and brunettes. However, if you’re a blonde, dark browns and taupes are best.

First of all, start off slowly with a dark navy blue eye pencil and mascara to get use to the color. Use a completely neutral eyeshadow on your eyelids, and limit the blue to a line very close to the upper lashes and mascara. Once you’ve gotten comfortable with the change, try applying a soft blue eyeshadow to your eyelids before using the liner. As you become more adventurous experiment with bolder blues, turquoise (looks best with tanned skin), and
aqua.
For a daytime look, match blue mascara and eyeliner with classic maritime blue and white nautical style clothing such as Capri pants with a striped navy and white t-shirt.

To create a more smoky eye for evening wear use a darker blue eyeshadow and smudge it on both the top and bottom lids. Blending is key here, so be sure to use a professional brush (not the freebies) and blend well into the eye. For more direction, check out this article: How to Apply Smoky Eye Makeup. Finish off the look by using a bronze cheek color blush and shimmering but neutral/nude lip color.

To achieve a more modern and softer look, place a little dark blue eyeshadow close to the lashes with brighter colors further away. To add a bit of glamour to your style apply a sheer wash of iridescent, pale blue eyeshadow on your lids and just a hint of metallic brow powder. This will give you a sun-kissed look and liven up your skin.

For day wear, apply a soft wash of lilac eyeshadow on the eyelids and soft pencil in a matching color or silver all the way around the eye. Apply just one coat of mascara to keep eyelashes softly colored. Pale-skinned women should keep their lip color very neutral, with only a hint of complimentary color. Dark-skinned women can get away with strongly colored, deep purple lips as long as they keep it sheer.

For a hot night out, apply deep lavender or plum colored eyeshadows to step up the smokiness of the eye color while using silver as a highlighter. For eyes that mesmerize, add smoky gray or deep plum eyeliner and black mascara. Finish off the look by very lightly brushing nude/neutral blush onto your cheekbones to keep your skin looking sheer and natural.

Other tips for wearing blue and lavender eye makeup:
Use two different eyeshadow hues, one light and one dark. Choose a soft color for the entire eye area and apply it up to the brow bone. Then use the darker color only up to your eye's crease. Be careful not to go too high with the dark shade since dark shades can make eyes recede. This is why you need to make sure not to place the darker color above the crease line.

rihanna_makeup_bag_wearing_blue_and_lavander_eye_makeupIf you have light colored hair do not use black eyeliner when using blue colored eye makeup. It has too harsh of an effect. Instead, use a deeper-hued shade of blue like indigo or navy. However, if you have a darker shade of hair, using a dark brown eyeliner with a lavender can bring out your eyes. Take for example, Rihanna's eye makeup on your right. The dark eyeliner compliments her darker shade of hair and brings out her eyes.

When using blue colored eye makeup keep the rest of your makeup light and avoid using colors on lips. Not only will your lips end up competing with your strong eyes, but the colors could clash. Glossy nude lips
suit the blue eye makeup look perfectly.

For even more glamour try Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Moire

It is a colored mascara that catches and reflects light as it hits your lashes. Talk about eye catching!

If you have red eyes, using blue eyeliner will 'erase' their appearance. Remember, blue eyeliner makes blue eyes pop!
